Gaumukh Tapovan Trek in the Gangotri National Park in Uttarakhand is, for me, one of the memorable treks ever! This day, as the weather cleared – after an incessant snowfall for the whole of previous day, slowing down much later into the night, we set out to explore the grand Meru Glacier.

The greens looked a shade lighter under the blanket of the early winter fog that morning. A dirt-track gently meandered into the forest. Sunlight was yet to slice through the forest canopy. The tranquil silence was occasionally broken by the chirps and sounds of songbirds, hidden away from sight. The forest looked soothing with all the greens and browns, sprinkled with vibrantly coloured, tiny wildflowers.

After an almost incessant snowfall the previous night, we woke up to a beautiful clear day. And there it was, the stunning mount Shivling standing tall in its full glory! It was completely obscured the previous day when we had set up the camp even as it snowed continuously, it was hard to even imagine something this grand stood right there and we couldn’t see it!

It was a quiet afternoon, in the initial period of lockdown (of the Covid-19 situation). The unusual quietness must be baffling the other living creatures, we often joked (though I felt sometimes it could actually be so). I started spending more time in the balcony and even set up a cozy reading/working space there.
